Busia County students have beat all odds to represent Kenya at this year’s East African Secondary Schools athletic championship. The championship will take place in Arusha, Tanzania starting August this year.
The two Busia County students namely Delisha Atyang from Achiya Echakara Secondary School, Kamuriai and Desta Khasoa Wafula from Canon Awuor Secondary Nambale will join other qualified Kenyan students for the regional championships.
Delish booked herself a ticket to the regional championships after finishing in second position at 200 nmetres in a time of 26.1 seconds behind one Beatrice Odero from Kowuor Secondary School who topped with s time of 25.8 seconds.
Desta on the other hand came in second in long the jump competition with a limp of 5.19 meters. The long jump section was won by Antonella Juma from Kwathanze Secondary with a limp of 5.33 meters.
Missed to secure place
Other Busia County students who performed well despite missing to secure a place for the East African regional games are Cynthia Isapu from St Monica Chakol Girls High School and Maryline Nabwire from Kingandole Secondary.
While Cynthia finished in fourth position in the in Javelin event with a throw of 40.0 meters, Maryline scooped position eight in the shot put event with a throw of 8.35 meters.
Unfortunately, Busia County did not produce any male student for the East African championships this year. The only male student to finish among the top eight from Busia was Leonox Bahati from Kolanya Boys High School. He came in at position eight at the 200 meters event.
The national leg of secondary schools games championships ended last Saturday in Mombasa County.
