There was panic in Mundika area of Busia County over a fire that erupted from the wheel of an oil tanker Monday morning.
According to the tanker’s driver, one Hissani Abdi, smoke started billowing from the left side of the tanker truck. This prompted him to stop the truck and check the fire source.
Upon examining the section that was producing smoke, Abdi noticed a fire on the tires. He immediately attempted to put out the fire using a portable fire extinguisher in vain.
County fire engine
Fortunately, the Busia County fire engine arrived in minutes and contained the fire before any tragedy could occur. The driver commended the quick response by the County’s fire engine that prevented a major incident.
Cooking oil to Rwanda
Abdi further confirmed that the tanker was carrying cooking oil from Mombasa to Rwanda’s capital in Kigali. He noted that it could have possibly been a different story had he been carrying petroleum products.
“I thank God that I was not carrying petroleum products, the story could be different”. Said Hissanna, the tanker driver.
Hissana said the tanker was carrying cooking oil to Kigali, Rwanda from the Port of Mombasa; “I thank God that I was not carrying petroleum products lest the story could be different”.
The Busia County disaster management officer, Mr Peter Oporia confirmed the incident. In his remarks after the fire was contained, Mr oporia commented the County’s fire department for their timely response in previous fire incidence in the region.
