Busia County government has indicated the interest and commitment tot restore and conserve the local culture and natural heritage.
It is in this regard that the County Government and the National Museums of Kenya signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at conserving and restoring cultural and natural heritage in the county.
The signing of the agreement was witnessed by Principal Secretary for Culture, Heritage and Sports Jospheta Mukobe during the Bunyala North Culture and Sports Expo at Budalangi High School on Good Friday.
Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi signed the MoU on behalf of Governor H.E Sospeter Ojaamong; witnessed by Culture, Sports Tourism and Social Services CEC Mr. John Mwami.
The National Museums of Kenya sigantory was Director-General Dr Mzalendo Kibunja and witness was Director in charge of Antiquities, Sites and monuments Purity Kiura.
The parties agreed to build up and nurture research and documentation of the heritage through exploration, studies, mapping and profiling activities, and to involve local communities in their heritage conservation and management through community engagement activities.
Heritage centers and museums
The management of heritage within the region will involve the construction of heritage centers and Museums, the landscaping of open cultural sites, construction of botanical gardens, the documentation and gazettement of important heritage sites.
The projects to be executed that enhance the livelihoods of the local people include such projects as crafting, dance and music for cultural tourism products.
Other activities are developing a cultural festival for the county specific themes annually, community engagement workshops and identification of youth heritage managers to head the cultural tourism efforts.
