President Uhuru Kenyatta has on Thursday, issued a stern warning to millers against taking advantage of the current drought to hike prices of maize flour.
President Uhuru’s statement was released during a Cabinet meeting in Nairobi. In the release , the president warned ,millers in Kenya against the tendency to hike maize flour prices due to the continued drought. He also addressed millers and individuals who hoard maize and other food essentials, saying stern action will be taken against them.
From alert to alarm
During the meeting, the cabinet noted that several counties were experiencing high levels of drought. The situation in the following counties ha moved from Alert to Alarm; Turkana, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Garissa.
The cabinet however, assured the public that the government has the situation under control. The president promised to take personal measures working with the cabinet to curb the possible rise of basic food prices in the country.
Earlier this week, some millers indicated a possible rise of maize flour price from 90 to 130 Kenya shillings per two kilogram packet. This,they attributed to the ongoing drought in the country.
