Ateker is a commonly used name that refers to the people of Jie, Karamojong, Turkana, Toposa, Nyangatom and Teso and their languages.
Miss Ateker Beauty Pageant is an annual regional competition that brings together the ‘Ateker’ communities from across the teso and turkana regions of Kenya and teso regions of northern and eastern Uganda.
During the Miss Aketer Beauty Pageant 2018, Gladys Namoi, a Toposa from Kapoeta State of South Sudan, was crowned the first Miss Ateker 2018/2019. Zipporah Alimlim from Turkana County was the first runners-up and Longokwo Louise of South Sudan came in as the second runners-up.
This year, Busia County is privileged to host Miss Ateker 2019 Pageant, scheduled for Saturday, April the 6th at the KNUT Hall in Amagoro town. The event brings together amazing models from Uganda and Kenya for a stiff competition testing the combination of beauty, brains and talents.
The pageant will be graced by, among others, the Busia County governor His Excellency Sospeter Ojaamong and the Thirdway Alliance party leader Dr. Ekur Aukot.
Here is the first batch of top contenders for the regional crown of Miss Aketer.
The crowned beauty of Miss Ateker will be expected to promote unity, peaceful co-existence and development in their regions as well as use the art to address degrading and harmful traditional practices and attitudes such as gender-based violence.
