Just a few weeks after Kenyans from one of the 47 counties found it hilarious and a waste of tax payers money for their county to host an event for the launch of a mobile payment service, Busia County has joined the dance.
Busia County government, through their social media page, has invited members of the public to an event that will see the county launch a mobile payment service commonly known as Mpesa Paybill, which will enable county residents to pay for county levies through their mobile phones efficiently.
However, it is not the efficiency of the payment system that has excited a section of Busia County residents, rather the fact that the County Government has actually set aside funds to hold not only an event but also carry out a procession walk from the Busia polytechnic grounds to the County Headquarters just to launch an Mpesa Paybill number.
The residents who responded on the post had varied reactions, some questioning what befell the county, for the leadership to spend tax payers money on such launches while there are more pressing issues that need their attention.
Other people felt it that it would be better to invest in good marketing and awareness creation of the paybill payment process beyond just the launch event.
Wheres, some residents wondered why Kenyan county governments in general seem to be quite obsessed with ”launching’ just anything, from pit latrines to mpesa paybill numbers.
