Over 300 Busia County farmers received funding to help boost their agri-business projects. The funds come from a 4 million shillings set aside by the county government under the Agricultural Development Fund.
The farmers were issued with cheques in a function presided over by the Busia County governor at Elwanikha primary school in Bukhayo East.
1150 farmers benefit
Speaking at the function, the governor revealed that a total of 1150 farmers in Busia County have so far benefited from the fund since its inception in 2015. The fund mainly targets rural area farmers who lack collateral for bank loans or can’t afford the high interest rates.
A total of 45 million shillings has been disbursed since 2015. The county government intends to build the revolving fund to up to 1 billion shillings to cater for all small scale farmers in the region.
The Busia County Chief confirmed through their partnership, World Bank is ready to fund small scale farmers in the region. He called upon to be serious with their projects in order to secure funding.
He further urged beneficiaries of the Agricultural Development Fund to repay their loans on time. This would enable other farmers benefit from the same.
The County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Dr. Moses Osia, who was also present at the event revealed that Busia is the only county in Kenya operating such a fund. He called upon farmers to embrace the support they get through the fund.
The chairperosn of the Board on Agriculrtural Development Fund Mr Ekissa George expressed concerns over farmers failing to pay back the loan. He urged all beneficiaries to be switf in repayment.
Also present were the Fund Administrator Mr. Benjamin Onyancha, Chief Officers Ruth Mukhongo (Agriculture), Lydia Nabwire (ECDE) and CECM for Agriculture Dr Moses Osia.
