There have been reports of high tension in Chuka town Tharaka Nithi County on Monday over rumours that Chuka University students are staging demonstrations. The demonstrations are alleged to address the recent killing of one of the university students on Friday night in a bar.
Anti-riot police were on Monday all over in Chuka town and along the University roads. Some business people preferred to close their shops fearing possible looting in case the students went on a rampage.
The police however, said they are very alert and ready to handle the situation in case the students rioted. The County Police boss promised safety to residents and their businesses.
The police boss asked university students to calm down and allow police to investigate the death of their colleague. The Univesity student leader Mr Maina confirmed the allegations. He said he was aware of some students planning a demonstration as a way to avenge the killing.
The students planned to storm the local bar commonly known as Kimwa bar where the student died after a bar fight.
The dead student is 19-year-old Duncan Bundi. He was allegedly beaten by a section of locals on the fateful night.
