Busia is the County to watch out for in agricultural economic development.
Busia County farmers under the Butula FSA SACCO received 5 million shillings from Agricultural Finance Corporation during a field day held on Friday 10th June at the Butula Youth polytechnic in Butula Sub-county.
The function was organized by Agricultural Financial Corporation and Butula FSA SACCO.
Hundreds of small and large scale farmers turned up for the event whose main purpose was to educate the residents on the need to invest in agricbusiness for ecnomic development.
The farmers’ field day was graced by the AFC managing director and Busia County Gubenatorial candidate Mr Lucas Meso.
Other AFC staff present included Western regional manager Mr Felix Kisengo, Kakamega branch manager Mrs Ann Kinadoso and the Corporate communications manager Mrs Pauline Kathambana. The Board of managers of the Butula FSA SACCO were also in attendance.
Mr Meso urged local farmers to take agricultural loans from the AFC and visit the nearest AFC branches (Bungoma and Kakamega) to learn how to improve their farming techniques.
“Do not be afraid to take the low interest loans offered by AFC. There is a tendency by farmers from the county to avoid taking loans for fear of auctioneers. Our interest on loans is very affordable by any hardworking farmer. For those of you who have applied and received loans congratulations. Feel free to come for more.” He said.
He also appreciated farmers’ efforts to repay the loans, “I also wish to appreciate the faithful ones who are complying with the loan repayment process.”
The AFC did not only come with farming theories but goodies as well. Mr Meso offered to sponsor ten farmers for an upcoming agricultural training in Eldoret. In addition, the Corporation used this function to award 5 million shillings to the Butula FSA SACCO in a bid to boost their lending base.
Mr Meso further promised to open an AFC branch in Busia before end of the year so as to bring its services closer to the people of Busia county.
He also promise to provide the youth with the necessary assistance in acquiring the AFC farmers’ development loans.
The Agricultural Finance Corporation staff encouraged farmers in Busia County to seek information on modern farming techniques through its various training platfroms. The residents were also encouraged to embrace agriculture and take up diverse forms of farming such as poultry, acquacultuire and Horticulture.
