Teso south MP Hon. Mary Emase has urged Busia County residents to preserve the environment by planting more trees.
She noted that Kenyans and more so the people of Busia county are engaging in deforestation without minding its effect,
“It’s unfortunate that we are cutting down more trees than we are planting. I urge our people please let us plant as many trees as possible. When you cut down one tree please plant five more trees. Deforestation is causing climate change and that is why we have global warming.”
The MP was speaking on Sunday at various centres in her constituencies including Adungos where she led her constituents in planting trees and clean markets to mark World Environment Day.
She revealed that through CDF they will continue to plant trees in schools and shopping centres,
“We are mostly targeting those schools which have no trees even on the fence.”
On his side, Nambale township ward MCA Godfrey Odongo has decried tendency by Busia residents of farming up to river banks.
He said this contributes to soil erosion where soil is carried away by water,
“In Busia we are very poor at conserving our environment. Farmers grow crops up to river banks without knowing that this cause soil to be washed away by water. The law is very clear that one should not do farming at river banks but our people just ignore it. I urge them to be conservative and plant more trees.”
